Joe Mattock is revelling in the decision to stick around at Rotherham after enjoying “the best day of my life”.
It would have been easy for Mattock to turn his back on the Millers last summer.
He was out of contract and had just been part of the worst-ever team in the Championship.
But despite receiving offers from other clubs, the left-back liked what he saw of Paul Warne and wanted to help right the wrongs of the 2016-17 horror campaign.
And he played a big, but perhaps under-rated, part in doing just that as the Millers bounced straight back to the Championship with a glorious promotion at Wembley.
Mattock, who played 40 times, said: “I knew that I was in a good environment and the gaffer wanted me to stay and I wanted to stay.
“I have said that before, I wanted to stick around at Rotherham, I have enjoyed my time here.

“I have been through two relegations and they are not nice but at the end of the day it’s part and parcel of football and I said to my family that if we can keep the players this year in League One we have a chance of staying up.
“So I am glad I stuck around and what a season it has been.”
After the embarrassment of winning just five games and going down with a record-low points total, it was some turnaround 12 months later, with Richard Wood’s double at Wembley capping off a memorable season.
Mattock has won two promotions before, with Leicester and West Brom, but ranks this one as his favourite.
“That was the best day of my life, it’s unbelievable,” he said of the Wembley win.
“All the hard work and effort that has been put into this year has been topped off with this victory.
“Obviously it would have been nice to have got the victory in 90 minutes but we went that extra bit further which probably made the win a little bit more satisfying.
“At the end of the day it is an occasion that might never come around again and for me, I’m 28 and it’s the first time I’ve been there to play.
“I’ve had two previous promotions, but they’ve been automatic, and this is by far the best.”
