Paul Warne has fought off his temptation to keep local boy Jerry Yates in town in order for the player to get some action.
Yates has been allowed to join League Two Carlisle on a six-month loan until January after struggling to find regular action with the Millers.
The 21-year-old, who came through the ranks at the club, made his debut in 2015 but has made only 14 starts since and scored a handful of goals.
He barely featured in the second half of last season as the Millers won promotion from League One and was not named in the squad for the play-off final at Wembley.
With Rotherham now back in the Championship his potential game time looks even more limited, leaving a reluctant Warne with no option but to allow his game to develop elsewhere.

“Selfishly I should keep him because he could be my local one on the bench,” the boss said.
“I really like him, my opinion is what it is, he has played in the friendlies and done well, he has been in the top two strikers in pre-season really.
“But for him, developing him, he is our player, if he goes and has a good four months at Carlisle and comes back in January and scores me six goals then happy days.
“He is at the time now where he has been really patient bless him and the fact that I didn’t put him on the bench at Wembley kills me.
“I didn’t put him on the bench, we’ve gone up a league, I have brought more players in, it’s going to be difficult to get game time.

“I am really pleased with him, I just hope it goes well for him.”
Carlisle boss John Sheridan, who is friends with Warne, said on his club’s official website: “Jerry is a bit different to what we’ve already got up front. He’s lively and he’ll play on the shoulder.
“I think he’s one of those players who just needs to be playing. He’s done really well for Rotherham, but he’s been in and out of the side because of the quality of strikers they’ve got there.
“He’s a young kid and I believe if he’s playing on a regular basis he’s got goals in him.”
