Richie Towell discusses his future at Rotherham

Richie Towell would “love” to return to Rotherham next season but admits his future is in Brighton’s hands.

The Irishman, who spent the season onĀ loan from the Seagulls, has been a key player in the Millers’ promotion back to the Championship, which was sealed with a play-off final win over Shrewsbury on Sunday.

He made 46 appearances, scoring six times, including the goal of the season for his effort at Northampton.

Considering he has played only six times for the Seagulls, who retained their place in the Premier League, he is unlikely to feature in their plans.

Towell will return to pre-season training on the south coast in a month’s time and will wait to find out his fate.

“I am going back to Brighton on June 28, which is not the longest break for me, but it is part and parcel of being a professional footballer,” he said.

“I will just go back there, do pre-season and literally just wait to see what they say to me.

“I am still contracted to Brighton, so my future lies in their hands. I have another year with an option of another year, so I will just wait to see what they want for me to do and whatever they say, I am contracted to them.

“I would love to come back here, I have really enjoyed my time here, I have loved every minute of it, to come back here would be nice but it’s all down to Brighton.”

If there is to be no return to the AESSEAL New York Stadium, then Towell bowed out in the best way possible, with Wembley glory.

“It’s amazing from the very start of the season that was the aim, to get promoted, and to do it through the play-offs, there is no better feeling,” he added. “We are all buzzing.

“Even over the two games we were the better team and at Wembley we were the better team as well.

“We had over 20-odd shots, but I think you can see the attacking threat we had, we thoroughly deserved it.

“There is no better at way, at Wembley, the most fans that have come to watch us this season, my friends and family, my partner and little girl were here so to do it in front of them is great.”
