Paul Warne expects his pursuit of a Championship midfielder to go down to the wire.
Rotherham have put two bids in for a target, who Warne has confirmed is playing in the second tier, and the boss had hoped to get a deal tied up quickly.
But Warne is now predicting any potential move could go close to the January 31 deadline.
He said: “We upped the bid. We’ve offered a good price and it’s now up to the club to decide whether they want to sell.
“I don’t think anything will happen before this weekend. I think it will go to the wire regrettably. He plays in a league above us.”
Meanwhile, Warne is waiting to hear back from a pair of strikers he is trying to sign, but expects to have positive news soon.
The Millers have already brought Michael Smith into the club following the exit of Kieffer Moore.
Warne added: “I have spoken to a couple of strikers who are giving it some thought. I will have a striker in before the window shuts.
“It’s just a bit of a waiting game really, but I’m confident I will get somebody. Obviously, I have my targets in preference order. Ideally, I’ll get my first target and we’ll be ‘cooking’.”
